Sacramento authorities are examining a gunfire incident that took place on April 18 2026 at the Howe Community Park area at the moment Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were clearing a large unauthorized gathering of several hundred people.
Background
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first dispatched to the park at about 6:30 PM on April 18 after receiving reports of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Soon after, another report was received concerning a possible fight happening at Howe Park.
Air support searched from above but reported no active disturbance. Regardless, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had come together at the location in an unauthorized manner.
When the Shots Rang Out
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies began the process of clearing the park by surrounding the park and broadcasting over loudspeakers instructing the hundreds present to go home. Around 15 minutes were allotted for attendees to disperse.
It was during this dispersal that an estimated 20 to 25 shots were discharged. Gunfire triggered a stampede. Officers immediately began searching for victims.
Those Who Were Hit
By the time the scene Cottage Way shooting Sacramento was secured, four gunshot victims were discovered with shooting injuries. The four individuals — including a female and three males all reportedly in their 20s — were transported to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Emergency physicians reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one had injuries classified as minor. Fortunately, all four were in stable condition.
Sacramento Metro Fire arrived on scene and assisted with medical triage the injured at the park.
Physical Evidence
The primary shooting scene appears to have taken place adjacent to Cottage Way close to the Home Depot situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Law enforcement investigators located extra shell casings along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were noted in the iron perimeter fence alongside the nearby Home Depot. The physical evidence confirmed that a shooter had been firing southward from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot store. The store itself was temporarily locked down while the scene was active. CSI units alongside detectives worked tirelessly late into the evening.
Suspect Vehicle Located
Information relayed via scanner audio showed that a vehicle identified as a Kia had been stopped in an area within Solano County. Four suspects were held for questioning. Sheriff's units were dispatched to Solano County to bring the suspects back for questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators established that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
